Who do you think you are?
I’ve been reading the book `The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ to Ethan…fast track to chapter two and the Queen asks the not-so-innocent and cheeky Edmond `What are you?’ He struggles to answer the question. In his reality all he is, is a younger brother, a big brother, a boy on holidays. The wicked queen is able to identify him through the confused answers as something he had never been identified as before. She knows he is so much more than that… that there is an innate ‘power’ in his humanity that could spell disaster for her, and likewise for us – the devil knows you are so much more than `that’ (what you appear in your humanity). Who we truly are, is revealed to us simply by using the word of God as a mirror.
Jesus says in Matthew 5:13-16: You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? … You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
At first glance – it seems like an odd comparison to make – SALT? Have you ever looked in the mirror and seen a pile of salt? When you see yourself in the mirror of the word and see SALT …there is way more that just a pile of white stuff. To give it some context, Jesus’ listeners would have known that salt was almost as valuable as money and was often used instead of money. Salt was very valuable in Jesus day and when he used that term his listeners knew there was great weight to phrase. He doesn’t say we are the salt of Hills Church, or the salt of our family but His statement …’you are the salt of the earth’ is a huge statement…
If He calls you salt what does that mean for you: Do you see this image in the mirror?
SALT is a preserving agent, lengthening life: You there in the mirror are meant to be a life saver, a life preserver….helping others find eternal life…lengthening the lives of those around you. What today can you do to bring life, preserve life, lengthen life, flavour someone’s life and add hope.
Do you reflect purity? SALT Purifies: You are a purifying agent….In a world of impurity you become an agent of purity, cleansing and purifying, bringing God’s grace & mercy to a putrid and dirty world. If you can’t see it then find someone who is like SALT to your life and let them be an agent of change for you.
Do you see yourself as a thirst creator? SALT creates thirst: You stir thirst in those who need the water of life. In bars all over the world you find peanuts. This is not the bar tender being kind and generous. He is adding a thirst creator to your digestive system so that you’ll drink more. When you are truly filled with God’s love and the taste of heaven, you will create a divine thirst in others where they will say…what is it about you? …why are you joyful? Why are you whole? How is it you are not broken with your life story?
Do you see yourself as a melting agent? SALT melts. In areas where it snows a lot …you can throw salt on the snow and it melts. You as the salt of the earth can have that effect on the coldest, hardest heart.
Do you see yourself as a healing agent? SALT heals: salt water speeds up the healing process. Being filled with the spirit of God can be a healing agent to hurting and broken and wounded people.
Let me challenge you today to find a sister & add some SALT to her world…………….. Ask God to show you how. Keep His image of who you are in front of you today …it could just change your life. The power of salt is lost when it remains stockpiled up, unused….Get out there and be who God called you to be.
